'Padmavati' has been raised issues from the day it was finished shooting. Protesters wanted to ban the film by issuing death threats to the director Sanjay Leela Bansali and the main actress Deepika Padukone. A number of actors came forward with a signed petition addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to show their solidarity with the actress.

However, Kangana Ranaut's was refused to sign the petition.
She explained her stance by stating that she got a call from her friend Anushka Sharma to sign the petition written by Azmi when she was in Jodhpur for the shoot of 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi'. She then explained Deepika has all her support.
She further stated that she has her own set of ideas and opinions about the current situation and that she was sitting on the fence to join the 'Deepika Bachao' campaign.
